In the early 90's, a song called "If I Had $1000000" was released. I don't remember much of the song, but it's main line, "If I had a million dollars", got stuck in my head...a lot.
What I would have done with $1,000,000 as a kid is much different than what I would do as a Kid's Pastor. (Thank goodness...I mean, who really needs a house made out of strawberry licorice?)
Regardless, it was fun to dream then, and it's fun to dream now.
I recently had a "Dream Meeting" with my Kid's Ministry staff. We got a blank whiteboard and asked ourselves the question, "If there were no limits on our budget, what would our Kid's Ministry look like?"
Then the dreams started coming.
It was so much fun to dream big, even ridiculously big! It was a moment when we didn't worry about budgets or limitations. There was nothing that couldn't be done. If we dreamed it, it could happen.
At a Kid's Pastor's retreat, I was challenged to Pray Big and Ask Big. God does not have limitations. He is not looking at his checkbook or bank account like...
"Um...hey guys, listen. I'm not sure I'm gonna be able to do much this month. The price of miracles went up and we just had to fix the gates of pearl unexpectedly. So, I'm gonna need to hunker down until we can build our emergency fund back up."
Quite the contrary, we were instructed to ask, and ask big, over and over in the Bible. In fact, here is one of the things God has actually said...
“Ask, and it will be given to you. Search, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened to you. Everyone who asks will receive. The one who searches will find. The door will be opened to the one who knocks.
“Suppose your son asks for bread. Which of you will give him a stone? Or suppose he asks for a fish. Which of you will give him a snake? Even though you are evil, you know how to give good gifts to your children. How much more will your Father who is in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! (Matthew 7:7-11, NIrV)
Now, don't take me wrong. I don't think God is a genie. You don't just get everything you wish for. But, that doesn't mean you can't ask.
Remember that moment as a kid, when you were really hoping your parents would say yes to something you really wanted...and they DID!
I want to encourage you to start asking your Heavenly Father for some of those things you really want to see happen in your Kid's Ministry. In your church. In your family. In your own life.
Dream Big. Pray Big. Ask Big.
